HISTORY was made at a remote NT school when for the first time in 13 years a cohort of students graduated from high school.

Seven students recently completed studies at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Thamarrurr Catholic College in Wadeye, 400km from Darwin, the first cohort to graduate since 2007.

The school’s last graduate was a single student in 2014. Deputy principal Matthew Spring said it was the culmination of “a lot of hard work”, efforts by staff and improvements to students’ learning.

“This was not just a three-year journey for them, they’ve started since transition,” he said.

It was also the first time curriculum using Murrinhpatha, the common tongue of Wadeye, was counted towards students’ completion, which Mr Spring said was key to their successful studies.

“It’s a family achievement, not just a school achievement. The families supported the kids to get them here, and we did our job to support them,” he said.
