TERRITORY education staff planning to go interstate for Christmas are being urged to register their travel plans with the Education Department to ensure the safety of staff, students and the broader community.

On September 23 the department introduced the Safe Travel Register, which requires all government education staff who intend to travel interstate for any reason to submit their plans.

The register helps staff make decisions about their travel, and allows the department to contact staff and provide advice and support if interstate regulations or border restriction change.

“(It) ensures we have the staff in our schools and can plan to ensure the continuation of learning for students,” a department spokeswoman said.

The spokeswoman said 349 school-based staff have used the Safe Travel Register so far.

Education Department chief executive Karen Weston encouraged educators to visit family interstate but asked them to listen to health advice, maintain strict hygiene and sign up to the register.

“We’re all missing family, and some of our educators need to travel interstate to see family and Christmas time is just the time,” she said.

“We’d ask our educators to follow the health advice, particularly the NT Chief Health Officer’s advice.

“We ask people to still use our travel register because as we know, things could change at any time, in any jurisdiction.”

Ms Weston encouraged staff to socially distance, wash hands and to use masks if they thought it would make them feel safer.

“It’s been an amazing year and I certainly understand our staff and our principals will want to go back to be with family,” she said.
