THE head of the independent panel set up to review the proposed Dan Murphy’s Darwin superstore has moved to assure the public its process is “open”, “transparent” and “independent”, as community consultation begins this week.
Chairman Danny Gilbert said the panel, which was announced by Woolworths in December, wanted to hear from as many people as possible to best inform its findings.
“The terms of reference are very broad – the panel is not limited in any way in terms of what it wants to look at and recommend. It’s open to the panel to make whatever recommendations the panel considers to be appropriate,” he said.
“We’re here to listen.”
Panel members arrived in Darwin yesterday and will be meeting with stakeholders until Thursday, March 11.
Mr Gilbert said its members wanted to consult as widely as possible. “We’re talking to a very large group of people, more than 50 organisations, representing hundreds and thousands of people in the Territory and the rest of Australia,” he said.

“They include Indigenous health organisations, Indigenous peak bodies, business leaders, health providers, land councils and local community members.”
“We might even talk to a few politicians.”
The panel will hold an open community meeting next Wednesday.
