The Top End has salivated the opening of the NT’s newest Guzman y Gomez store opening - and anyone wanting a tasty Mexican hit were willing to wait.
Among the throng of hungry Darwinites was Ahsan Mukhlis, his eyes popping out of his head at the grand opening deal of $5 burritos and bowls at the Stuart Park restaurant.
Traffic, snaked 100m down the Stuart Highway, moved quickly as the team of GYG workers busted out more than a thousand meals of burritos and bowls by midday.
Staff, including 80 in kitchen, three traffic controllers and three managers, felt “completely prepared for the surge.’’
Customers had a burrito in hand in as little as seven minutes.
A dedicated customer’s previous Sunday Scaries used to consist of a 30 minute drive to Bakewell, the closest GYG.

Many young families had been pining for GYG since its announcement and delay in January.
With most planning to get takeaway, the atmosphere encouraged everyone to sit and soak it in.
Guzman y Gomez’s spokeswoman Kate Winney said she was delighted with the bubbly spirit of the tight-knit community.
“We are looking forward to bringing the GYG’s 100 percent clean and freshly-prepared menu to the local community.”
The most popular item on the menu was a classic chicken burrito.
