New fuel and fast food outlet should be open by Christmas

CONSTRUCTION has started on a new service station and fast food outlet at an abandoned caryard in Stuart Park.
Independent fuel supplier Liberty is building the $12m service station and kitchen with in-house seating as well as Guzman y Gomez takeaway attached.
Located inbound on the Stuart Hwy at the old Darwin Suzuki site, it will be the another choice for motorists in the Top End’s fuel market.
Liberty Oil director David Goldberger said the company had expanded across Australia since opening in 1995 and already operated a Shell-branded roadhouse in Katherine.
Expected to open “this side of Christmas”, the Stuart Park service station will be the first Liberty-branded outlet operating in the Territory.
“We’ll have a food kitchen making our own food on-site and customers will be able to sit and eat at the premises if they don’t want to go straight back to their cars,” Mr Goldberger said.
“The kitchen’s quite extensive and we will serve good food like sandwiches, burgers and pies in a comfortable environment that’s different to most sites. We pay more attention to the design of our shops and have an industrial look to our design.”
Half-owned by Shell but with an independent management, Liberty will deliver another layer of competition in the Territory.
“This is more competition in the Darwin fuel market and it’s good to have a new player in the town,” Mr Goldberger said.
“Darwin’s got United, it’s got Puma and now it’s got me and the competition Liberty will bring.”
He is targeting employing up to a dozen staff when the service station opens.
Liberty is also spending approximately $5m upgrading the Shell roadhouse in Katherine into a Liberty-branded truck shop.
