Airport Development Group (ADG) remains unfazed as Dan Murphy's plan falls over

The owners of the land where Woolworths was planning to build its Dan Murphys liquor outlet have taken subdued line to the news that the development will not proceed.

Northern Territory embroiled in liquor outlet dispute

THE owners of the land where Woolworths was planning to build its Dan Murphy’s liquor outlet have taken a subdued line to the news that the development will not proceed.

The privately funded development would have included $9m of project costs, 100 construction jobs and then ongoing employment in the retail store.

Airport Development Group (ADG), which owns the Darwin International Airport, appeared unfazed after the Woolworths Group advised it would not be proceeding with the proposed Darwin Dan Murphy’s development.

ADG gave no indication what it would do with the site of the proposed Dan Murphy’s.

“ADG continues to work with partners to develop our 60-hectare master planned, mixed use Business Park, Darwin Airport Central,” it said.

The Endeavour Group changed the location of the proposed Dan Murphy’s Darwin store following community feedback. The proposed new site located between McMillans Road and Osgood Drive, was a prime location with dual entry points and was part of the Darwin Airport Retail Precinct.

When the Dan Murphy’s proposal first hit stormy waters in 2016 the NT Airports said Dan Murphy’s was an “anchor tenant” in a much larger airport expansion plan.

It was said that if the development did not go ahead the surrounding developments would be put at risk, because “we’ve secured some tenants around this tenant, and without them as the anchor, the other tenants in all likelihood will withdraw.”

The NT Chamber of Commerce also weighed in at the time saying it understood the social concerns but slammed government for the “stifling of new and genuine business, investment and jobs growth”.
