A NEW restaurant has opened at the site of the popular former Hog’s Breath Cafe in Palmerston.
Primal Bar & Grill opened at 18 The Boulevard, Palmerston about two weeks ago.
The independent local business offers modern Australian cuisine, including steaks and burgers smoked on site, as well as ice-cold drinks from the bar.
It comes after Hog’s Breath Cafe Palmerston permanently closed on February 1, after its former franchisees decided to focus on its sister store in Casuarina.

Primal Bar & Grill owner Kiera MacCarthy said the new restaurant was a “chill place where people can come and have a drink and some good quality food”.
“Our main appeal is that we smoke our meats,” she said.
“We serve smoked steaks, smoked burger patties and we have a massive smoking machine we park out the front that lets out lots of good smells.
“Also, because we’re a local business, we can source our meats locally and play around with the menu as we like … and we can take feedback and alter it to the liking of the public.”
Ms MacCarthy, who is just 19, is the daughter of the former franchisees of Hog’s Breath Cafe, Palmerston.
She said after years working in the hospitality industry, including several as a manager, she had jumped at the chance to start her own hospitality business when her parents closed down the cafe.
“It’s similar in some ways (to Hog’s Breath), but I think we’ve changed a lot of things,” she said.

“It has a completely different feel inside, there are lots of plants and it’s had a paint job.”
Ms MacCarthy said she was pleased to be able to give Palmerston residents another option for dining out with the new bar and grill.
Primal Bar & Grill is open 11.30am-2pm for lunch and 5.30pm-late for dinner seven days a week.
