A NEW $230,000 “advertising blitz” will spruik the Territory as “the beating heart of First Nations culture” in a bid to attract southern tourists during this year’s action packed dry season.

The events to be promoted in the campaign include the Darwin Festival, the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair, the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards, the National Indigenous Music Awards and the National Indigenous Fashion Awards.

The tourism push is funded by NT Major Events and minster Natasha Fyles said it would showcase the Territory’s “rich Indigenous culture” and “everything the NT has to offer”.

“These seven events are so incredibly unique to the Territory and, between them, they attract a wide variety of people, from fashionistas and music fans, to art and culture lovers,” she said.

“With events still in disarray around the nation, the Territory is a magnet for event lovers, and more and more Australians are realising the Territory is the place to visit this year.”

Darwin Festival chief executive James Gough said joining forces with the other events meant the industry could “present a stronger united offering”.

“This campaign is a unique opportunity to position Darwin as the meeting place to explore world-class First Nations cultural events,” he said.

“Festivals and events remain an important driver for domestic visitation to Darwin in August and Darwin Festival remains committed to connecting communities through the celebration of culture and the arts.”
