POLICE have charged two men with drink driving following separate incidents in Darwin and Palmerston overnight, with one allegedly blowing more than five times the legal limit.

Watch commander Bruce Payne said at about 7.15pm officers pulled over a 42-year-old man for a random breath test on Frances Bay Dr and he recorded a blood-alcohol reading of 0.252.

Sr Sgt Payne said further inquiries also revealed the man had been disqualified from driving for five years and he was taken into custody for processing.

Then at about 10.15pm, Sr Sgt Payne said police spotted a vehicle “hooning” near the carpark of the Gateway shopping centre.

“It was turning tightly and accelerating rapidly causing its tyres to squeal,” he said.

“The vehicle was apprehended and the 21-year-old male driver subsequently returned a medium range reading of 0.108.”
