NT looking to interstate travellers to boost tourism sector

THE Gunner Government is putting another $5m on the table to help the Territory’s struggling tourism industry with a campaign to attract interstate tourists during the low season.

The big hook for travellers is the chance to save up to $1000 on a Northern Territory holiday booking made between October 1 and March 31 next year.

For every $1000 spent on an NT booking, the customer will get a $200 discount up to a maximum $1000 discount.

Travel must be completed within these dates.

The booking must be made through partners and will be valid for bookable flights, accommodation, tours and attractions or vehicle hire.

Newly appointed Tourism Minister Natasha Fyles said the campaign would incentivise demand for the Northern Territory over the traditionally low season.

The NT Summer Sale campaign will partner with all the Australian shop front travel retailers including Holidays of Australia, Helloworld and Flight Centre, to drive sales.

“The global pandemic has caused a lot of hurt for our tourism and hospitality operators … we know it has been hard,” Ms Fyles said.

“The tourism and hospitality industries have been some of the hardest hit as a by-product of the COVID-19 pandemic, but Australian travellers are looking for safe tourism options, closer to home in locations with COVID-19 under control.

“The deal makes the Northern Territory an even more attractive destination for domestic travellers from safe home ports, which will in turn boost our local economy.

“The NT has continued to be the safest place in Australia throughout the pandemic contributing to the Territory’s ability to open the door to domestic tourists to experience the adventure of a lifetime.”

Ms Fyles said if people were considering visiting the NT, the message was clear.

“All Australians not located in a current hot spot are welcome to come to the Territory,” she said.

“Last year Aussies spent more than $64 billion on overseas holidays. With international travel on the backburner for a while yet, we’re encouraging everyone from areas where COVID-19 is contained to enjoy an adventure of a lifetime here in the NT.”

The $5m campaign comes on the back of the government’s very successful tourism stimulus vouchers that have seen more than 21,000 vouchers redeemed at tourism venues across the NT, with most Territorians spending just over $400 per voucher.

It is estimated that more than $8.6m has been generated by the Northern Territory government’s Territory Tourism Vouchers.
