International hospitality hopefuls went through a speed-dating style job interview with ten of Darwin’s most notable hospitality owners, with hopes of filling jobs in the lead up to a busy dry season.

Hosted by Phat Mango’s Martin Bouchier, 17 students went through their paces, hoping to win over barista, kitchen hand, event staff and even reception jobs from venue owners at last weeks event.

Hospitality NT chief executive Alex Bruce said the hospitality and tourism industries were facing acute skill and staff shortages in what he hoped would be a busy tourism season across the NT.

“We are hearing from businesses on a daily basis looking for employees – they want managers, cooks, chefs, baristas, waiters, bartenders, duty managers, marketing and social media professionals – literally every position within our industry,” he said.

“This event was the tip of the iceberg and we hope to grow the number of students working in our industry.

“We are looking at every avenue to fill our shortages and are calling on Territorians to consider taking up a second job and helping us out.”

Hospitality NT has launched several campaigns aimed at raising awareness of the job, career or even second job and hours that are available right now in hospitality businesses, with last week’s event partnered with Study NT to conduct the ‘speed interview’ job networking opportunity.

Ramada Suites Zen Quarter owner Michael Anthony said he was impressed with the candidates on offer and intended to hire a number of them.

“It was good, the calibre of the applicants was quite good, I’m personally surprised some of those people didn’t actually have a job,” he said.

“I think most of them will get a job, I’ve got one already and I hope to get a couple more.

One would be a night manager, another would be a cook and another would be a cleaner.”

Mr Anthony said the

“A lot with some beautiful personalities which is very suitable for our industry,” he said.

“Most of them would need some finishing off, just a touch more to round them off.”
