A DARWIN man has been charged with child abuse material offences after allegedly grooming a teenager in Western Australia over the internet.

Detectives from the Joint Anti-Child Exploitation Team (JACET) arrested the 25-year-old man on Thursday, and allege he groomed the teen over the internet and transferred money to the youth in return for self-procured child abuse material.

The teen reported the incident to WA Police in November 2020. WA JACET then referred the matter to the Northern Territory.

On Thursday NT and Australian Federal Police executed a search warrant on the man’s home and found him allegedly accessing child abuse material on his computer.

Police also found further material on a computer server and several other devices.

The man has been charged with the following Commonwealth offences:

474.25C – Procure child u/16 x 1

474.22 – Solicit child abuse material x 1

474.22 – Make available child abuse material x 1

474.22 – Promote child abuse material x 1

474.22A – Possess or control child abuse material x 9

He was remanded in custody to appear in Darwin Local Court on Friday.

Detective Sergeant Paul Lawson said police would continue to keep the community safe.

“This is another great example of a multi-jurisdictional investigation which has culminated in the arrest of the suspect and a number of serious charges being laid,” he said.

“The Northern Territory JACET will continue to work with national and international partners to keep the most vulnerable in our community safe.”
