A DEVELOPMENT application for a $12 million multi-storey carpark for the Alice Springs Hospital will be heard by the Territory’s development authority body today.
A new parking facility has been among the biggest needs at the Alice Springs hospital with parking often difficult for locals.
The proposal, announced in July, is to construct a four-storey (14.5m high) carpark to service the existing Alice Springs Hospital and ancillary uses.
The development will accommodate 250 cars and provide additional on-site carparking for staff and public at Alice Springs Hospital.
It is part of the Alice Springs Hospital Masterplan, along with the development of new staff accommodation.
The design of the building allows for future expansion to 500 spaces.

A document states the Heritage, Libraries and Sport Division of the Department of Tourism, Sport and Culture have “identified concerns with respect the design of the building and its interface with the heritage place”.
“Heritage Brach (Department of Tourism, Sport and Culture) … believe that the proposal is not in keeping with the character of the adjacent heritage precinct buildings.”
In their response, the applicant – GHD Pty Ltd – said the original proposal was for a six-storey structure but was amended to reduce the scale “to lessen impacts on the adjoining heritage precinct.”
“Through the use of an appropriate colour palette, building materials and landscaping, the visual impacts of the building can be reduced.”
The document also stated the Alice Springs Town Council identified numerous matters to be addressed including vehicle access and traffic management, availability of carparking spaces to the public, pedestrian linkages to the street and other hospital buildings.
One public submission was received in opposition to the proposal.
The Development Committee Authority will hear the application in a meeting tomorrow.
