US election: Joe Biden’s goals for Day One as President revealed

Joe Biden has already made major plans for his first day in the White House, with many of them likely to make Donald Trump furious.

Joe Biden already knows exactly what he will be doing as his first official day at the US President, with multiple actions taken by Donald Trump set to be scrapped within the first few hours.

Mr Trump is still refusing to accept the outcome of the presidential election and is pushing forward with his claims of voter fraud, which he is yet to produce any evidence of.

Despite this, Mr Biden already has four major executive actions he plans to take, most of which are likely to make his predecessor furious.

When asked about what exactly Mr Biden will do when he is sworn, his campaign adviser Symone Sanders told CNN the President-elect will “make good on his promises” he made during his election campaign.

With that in mind, this is what Mr Biden’s first day in office is expected to look like.

PARIS AGREEMENT

One of Mr Biden’s first actions as President will be to rejoin the Paris Climate Action Agreement, a deal which Mr Trump pulled out of in 2017.

At the time, Mr Trump described the climate deal as an “example of Washington entering into an agreement that disadvantages the United States to the exclusive benefit of other countries”.

He went on to blast the “draconian financial and economic burdens” the agreement placed on the US, before claiming it wasn’t fair to businesses, taxpayers and workers.

On the recently set up Biden-Harris transition website, climate change is listed as one of Mr Biden’s top priorities.

“President-elect Biden is leading the world to address the climate emergency and leading through the power of example. Biden knows how to stand with America’s allies, stand up to adversaries, and level with any world leader about what must be done,” the website states.

“He will not only recommit the United States to the Paris Agreement on climate change – he will go much further than that. He is working to lead an effort to get every major country to ramp up the ambition of their domestic climate targets.”

Mr Biden has been outspoken in his support for climate action, so a recommitment to the Paris Agreement won’t come as much of a surprise.

WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION

Another one of Mr Trump’s orders that will be reversed is his recent decision to withdraw the US from the World Health Organisation (WHO).

In April, Mr Trump announced he would halt all funding to WHO unless it made “substantive improvements” within 30 days.

Then in late May he announced he would be severing the relationship between WHO and the US, accusing the organisation of pandering to China in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

“The world is now suffering as a result of the malfeasance of the Chinese government,” he said at the time.

“China has total control over the World Health Organisation.”

Shortly after the Trump administration formally withdrew from the organisation, Mr Biden pledged to rejoin the moment he made it into the White House.

MUSLIM TRAVEL BAN

Mr Biden also plans to reverse another one of Mr Trump’s controversial decisions by scrapping the ban on travel from particular Muslim nations.

Shortly after Mr Trump took office in 2017, he issued an executive order banning travellers from seven majority-Muslim countries. This was later expanded to include another six countries.

The travel ban resulted in major backlash, with critics claiming the order amounted to unlawful religious discrimination.

In October Mr Biden promised to make repealing the ban a priority for his first day in office.

“As President, I’ll work with you to rip the poison of hate from our society to honour your contributions and seek your ideas. My administration will look like America, with Muslim Americans serving at every level,” he said.

“On day one, I’ll end Trump’s unconstitutional Muslim ban. I’ll push Congress to pass hate crimes legislation. I’ll implement the national strategy I’ve laid out since March to be Covid-19. I’ll end the deadly inequities in health care, education, and opportunity that this crisis has amplified. And together, we’ll rebuild the criminal justice system focused on redemption, not retribution.”

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said it would hold Biden to his election promises after congratulating him on his victory.

“President-elect Biden has pledged to end the Muslim Ban on his first day in office, include Muslims at every level of his administration and address issues of racial and religious discrimination,” said Nihad Awad, CAIR’s national executive director.

“We plan to join other American Muslim leaders and organisations in ensuring that the Biden administration fulfils these promises. We also plan to continue holding our government accountable when it errs.”

IMMIGRATION

Another change Mr Biden plans to squeeze in during his first day in office is reinstating a program which allows thousands of illegal immigrants to remain in the US.

In 2012, Barack Obama introduced the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program to regularise the immigration status of more than 640,000 people, known as “Dreamers”, living in the US that had arrived illegally as children.

“When Mr Trump came into office he made efforts to shut down the program and succeeded in reducing the protections it offered to immigrants. The Trump Administration made the cruel and counter-productive decision to terminate DACA, throwing into turmoil the lives of millions of Dreamers,” Mr Biden’s campaign website read.

“Dreamers and their parents should have a road map to citizenship through legislative immigration reform. But in the meantime, Biden will remove the uncertainty for Dreamers by reinstating the DACA program, and he will explore all legal options to protect their families from inhumane separation.”

These are the issues Mr Biden is expected to tackle during his first day on the job, but he also had a whole list of challenges he plans to take on in his first 100 days as president.

The COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare, racism, gun reform and taxes are all major issues the President-elect plans to deal with.

But before he can get to all of that, he and his team have to actually get into the White House, which is being made incredibly hard by Mr Trump.

In another desperate attempt to keep Mr Biden from claiming the top job, the president has reportedly instructed his senior officials not to co-operate with Mr Biden’s transition team.

According to The Washington Post, some officials have been ordered to block Mr Biden’s team from starting the normal transition process until the official election result was confirmed by the General Services Administration.

“We have been told: Ignore the media, wait for it to be official from the government,” an unnamed senior administration official told the publication.

The Trump-appointed administrator of the General Services Administration, Emily Murphy, has been delaying declaring Mr Biden as the official election winner.

This means that Mr Biden’s team is being blocked from accessing critical information and millions of dollars provided to the president-elect in order to move forward with the transition process.

Tensions are rising as a result of the delay, with The Washington Post reporting Mr Biden’s team is considering legal action if Mr Trump refuses to allow a peaceful transition of power.
