What Joe Biden’s first 100 days as US President look like

When Joe Biden walks into the White House, he will sit at his desk and be faced with a number of crises. This is the first thing he will do.

What happens now that Joe Biden has won the US election

Joe Biden may have won the presidency, but he has a long list of challenges which he has vowed to tackle head-on in his first 100 days as the leader of the free world.

He gave hints at some of the key issues he wants to address in his speech in Delaware yesterday — pointing to racism, international relations and climate change — and he is expected to wind back many of Donald Trump’s policies.

However, it is understood that his overriding priority will be tackling the pandemic.

As the USA waited on results yesterday, the nation clocked a new world record for a single-day increase in cases — more than 122,000 — and Mr Biden has been very critical of Mr Trump’s handling of the situation.

He said that from day one, he will call leaders around the world and try to rekindle relationships that have been soured under the Trump administration.

Another immediate priority will be to try and save Obamacare, that was being dismantled by Mr Trump.

It’s worth pointing out that many of what Mr Biden wants to do will be a struggle for him if the Republicans take the Senate.

He could use executive orders, as much as possible, to overturn Mr Trump’s orders, including those that loosened environmental regulations.

However, if the Democrats win the Senate you can expect to see these changes brought in very quickly.

Let’s take a look at what he wants to do.

HOW WILL HE TACKLE THE PANDEMIC?

He will make lightening fast appointments of the Cabinet secretaries who will be at the heart of his response — including his health secretary, treasury secretary, and the director of the National Economic Council.

He has promised to get his advice from Dr Anthony Fauci, America’s leading infectious diseases expert, and make him a crucial figure.

He also plans to establish a “pandemic board” which would steer resources to fight COVID-19 and improve testing.

REKINDLING OLD FLAMES

Mr Biden has also promised, from his very first day in office, to reach out to the US allies who Mr Trump pushed away and push to rejoin international groups such as the World Health Organisation.

“Day 1, if I win, I’m going to be on the phone with our NATO allies saying ‘we’re back’,” Mr Biden said in July. “We’re back and you can count on us again.”

‘MUSLIM BAN’ OVERTURNED

Another issue Mr Biden believes Mr Trump alienated voters on is immigration, and he’ll be making some big changes to policy.

The controversial “Muslim ban” which Mr Trump introduced days after being sworn in and prevented travel from several Muslim-majority countries, would be rescinded.

He will immediately stop the family separation policy for illegal immigrants on the Mexican border.

He will roll back Mr Trump’s restrictions on immigration, increase the number of applications processed each day and send “humanitarian resources” to the border.

Eleven million “dreamers”, who were brought to America as children by their undocumented migrant parents, will also face a clearer path to citizenship and be protected from deportation.

Undocumented migrants who serve in the military will also be protected from deportation and families who have been separated over the past four years will be reunited.

He will also work with Congress to pass a law on hate crime.

RACISM, GUNS AND TAXES

Mr Biden has consistently attacked Mr Trump on race issues and this year has seen America erupt over the killing of George Floyd.

In his first 100 days, Mr Biden wants to establish a new police oversight body to address what he calls “institutional racism”.

Another issue that has plagued America over the years is mass shootings and Mr Biden wants to draw up a bill to end gun background check loopholes.

On taxes, Mr Biden has also said he would take immediate action to reverse tax cuts, for individuals and companies, that Mr Trump secured in 2017.

CLIMATE CHANGE

Mr Biden has vowed to overturn all of Mr Trump’s executive orders affecting the climate.

On his first day he will sign an executive order rejoining the Paris climate accord, which the US originally joined when he was vice president.

“The first thing I’d do as president is call a meeting of all the nations who sign on to the accord, in Washington, DC, to up the ante,” he said during his campaign. “Because we’ve learned so much just in the last years about the science, about what has to happen quicker.”
