A woman has died after a tow truck carrying a ute and its passengers slid down an embankment.

A woman has died after the tow truck she was travelling in slid down an embankment in the Snowy Mountains.

Emergency services were called to the Snowy Mountains Highway at Kiandra, southeast of Talbingo, about 7.30pm on Saturday following reports a tow truck had been involved in a serious crash.

The truck was towing a ute when it left the road and slid down an embankment.

There were four passengers inside the truck at the time of the crash: a 54-year-0ld male driver, a female passenger, the 29-year-old woman who owned the ute, and her young son.

When paramedics and police officers arrived on the scene, they found that the woman travelling in the passenger seat of the tow truck had died.

The 54-year-old male driver was still trapped inside the vehicle in a serious condition.

Rescue crews worked to release him before he was rushed to Canberra Hospital.

Incredibly, the 29-year-old owner of the ute and her son had escaped with minor injuries.

They had been travelling in the back seat of the tow truck.

Both were taken to Cooma Hospital to be checked as a precaution.

The highway was closed between Miles Franklin Drive at Talbingo, and Denison Boundary Trail, near Providence Portal, for more than eight hours.

The crash site was cleared about 4am on Sunday and all lanes of the Snowy Mountains Highway have been reopened.
