Authorities have launched an investigation after a man was bitten by a shark off the West Australian coast.

A St John Ambulance spokeswoman told NCA NewsWire a man in his 30s was bitten by the shark at Delta Island, west of Karratha on Wednesday.

She said emergency crews were called about 6.30pm to co-ordinate his rescue to the mainland.

“A boat was sent from Varanus Island, he was then taken to Barrow Island and then flown to Karratha Health Campus about 1am,” the spokeswoman said.

A WA Country Health spokeswoman said the man remained “in our care” and was in a stable condition at Karratha Health Campus.

“No other details are able to be provided in line with patient confidentiality measures,” she said.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development has confirmed it’s investigating the report and working with local authorities to confirm further details.

Swimmers in the area are being urged to take extra caution when in the water around Delta Island and adhere to local beach closures.
