A drunken Jetstar passenger had to be forcibly removed from a flight by police after allegedly directing racist abuse at flight attendants.
The incident occurred on Flight JQ29 from Melbourne to Bangkok on September 28, which was forced to make an emergency landing in Darwin due to the unruly behavior of a man on board.
Fellow passenger Rukaiya Shabbir told news.com.au that the man, who was traveling alone, appeared intoxicated from the outset of the 10-hour flight.
She claimed that he had brought alcohol onto the plane and was drinking directly from the bottle before staff confiscated it.
“He’d been drinking for hours,” Ms Shabbir said.
“The pilot announced that if the man didn’t calm down, they would have to make an emergency landing.”
“When I woke up, the two passengers who were sitting next to him were gone,” she continued.
“He was racist towards them, saying slurs and rambling. Saying ‘you asians get away’. It was super racist.
“There was a complaint to the pilot. The captain said because of inappropriate behaviour, we would be making an emergency landing in Darwin.”
Despite being warned, the situation escalated, forcing the pilot to divert the flight to Darwin where Australian Federal Police officers boarded the plane to detain the man.
According to Ms Shabbir, the man was so intoxicated that he asked if they had landed in Thailand when the plane touched down in the Northern Territory.
