Pilot audio has gone viral on X, formerly Twitter, after it revealed the moment a plane was forced to divert after a passenger fell ill with crew vomiting.

United Airlines 2477 was bound for Boston from Houston on Sunday morning local time when a situation so severe unfolded it had land in Washington instead.

Flightaware footage shows the Boeing 737-800 aircraft landing at Washington Dulles International Airport at around 1.36pm.

The airline told the New York Post the plane needed to undergo “a deep clean” after a passenger became ill.

“I talked to the crew and it sounds like it’s quite bad back there,” a pilot on board said to air traffic control in audio shared on X.

“The crew is vomiting, and passengers all around are asking for masks etc … with this being a biohazard I think we need to get this plane on the ground asap.”

The audio post has been viewed almost half a million times in the few hours since it was uploaded with many curious as to what exactly happened.

News.com.au has contacted United Airlines for comment.

According to the Post, the airline confirmed none of the 155 passengers or its six crew members required medical help.

“The aircraft is currently undergoing a deep clean and we are working to get customers on their way to Boston soon,” United said in a statement.

Meanwhile, earlier this month a flight just 36 minutes into its journey was forced to turn back.

Irish-based budget airline Ryanair was heading from Agadir, Morocco to London Stansted when two passengers were filmed screaming at each other while flustered cabin crew tried to calm them down.

Punches were reportedly thrown between the two men while Ryanair staff attempted to intervene.

When the plane landed in Marrakech, it was met by Moroccan police who marched those involved in the scrap off the plane.
