A United Airlines flight en route to the US was forced to turn back to Sydney Airport following a mid-air emergency — the airline’s fifth emergency in a week.
Flight UAL830 left the airport around 12pm on Monday heading to San Francisco when its journey was cut short after it suffered a suspected mechanical issue.
It was roughly two and a half hours into its trip, having reached a calibrated altitude of 30,000ft, according to Flight Radar 24, when it had to turn back, landing at 2.34pm.
A Level 3 Emergency was declared with a major emergency response.
There were reports of a hydraulics fault, according to The Guardian.
Firefighters met the Boeing 777-300 plane on the tarmac with all 167 passengers having deboard from the aircraft while the fault was being investigated.
“On Monday, March 11 United flight 830 from Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport to San Francisco International Airport returned to Sydney due to a maintenance issue,” a United Airlines spokesperson told news.com.au.
“The plane landed safely and passengers deplaned normally at the gate. Passengers were provided accommodation overnight and rebooked on a flight to San Francisco today.”
The incident joins a line up of United Airlines emergency landings in the last week.
On Friday, United flight 821 from San Francisco to Mexico City was forced to land in Los Angeles due to an issue with the aircraft’s hydraulic system — making it the airline’s fourth emergency landing since last Monday.
Earlier that day, its Boeing 737 Max 8 rolled off a runway at Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston. It was coming from Memphis, Tennessee with passengers having to be evacuated from the plane.
“The aircraft left the pavement and entered the grass,” airport officials said, according to Yahoo.
On Thursday, one of the airline’s Japan-bound flights was forced to divert to Los Angeles International Airport when the plane lost a tyre after taking off in San Francisco.
The falling landing gear from United Flight 35 damaged several cars in the parking lot of San Francisco International Airport after the Boeing 777-20 took off around 11.30am, according to the airline and airport officials.
Shocking footage shows the plane lose one of its six tyres on the left side as it ascended into the air.
The Boeing 777-200 plane, which was heading to Osaka with 235 passengers, 10 flight attendants and four pilots on board, safely landed at LAX, United Airlines confirmed to the New York Post.
