Investigators will on Tuesday descend on the site of a plane crash which claimed two lives on Boxing Day, with the cause of the incident yet to be determined.

The two occupants of a foreign-registered light plane were both killed when it crashed in bushland southwest of Sydney, sparking a large scrub fire.

Emergency services were called to the blaze near the vicinity of Appin Rd and Colliery Rd in Appin, about 75km southwest of the Sydney CBD, after 3pm on Boxing Day.

Area crews located a light plane after an extensive search of the bushland, with two bodies found in the wreckage.

A NSW Police spokesman said the victims were yet to be formally identified.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said investigators from its Canberra and Brisbane offices would arrive at the accident site on Tuesday.

“The initial ATSB safety investigation will include an examination of the wreckage, assessment of aircraft and pilot records, weather information and any available recorded data,” an ATSB spokesperson said.

“The ATSB’s evidence collection will define the size and scope of the investigation and determine the expected timeframe for the completion of a final report.

“The ATSB asks anyone who may have seen the aircraft in any phase of its flight, or who may have footage of any kind, to please make contact via our website.”

A preliminary report into the accident would not be released for up to eight weeks, the spokesperson said.
