Perth man fights for life in Bali after horror crash

A Perth man is fighting for his life in Bali after a horror crash two days into his trip.
Shane Ramsey, a carpenter from Clarkson, arrived on the popular holiday island on Friday, a day before his friend’s wedding, in which he was a groomsmen.
But things took a horrific turn the following morning when Shane was on his way to watch Sunday’s UFC event with a couple of his mates.
The 30-year-old was riding a scooter in Seminyak when he seemingly lost control and smashed headfirst into a pole.
He suffered a fractured skull, bleeding on the brain, severe brain damage and blood in his lung.
His distraught mother Catherine Ramsey hopped on the first flight out of Perth to be by her son’s side, where he remains in ICU in a coma.
Speaking from his hospital bed at BIMC Hospital in Kuta, Ms Ramsey said her son is now fighting for his life as she broke down in tears.
“Shane has been around bikes forever. All we can gather is the bike seemed to lose control and he came off and he hit the post with his head unfortunately,” Ms Ramsey told news.com.au.
“He was with two boys from the wedding and they rang an ambulance.”
The boys were told it would be 10 minutes, however when it didn’t arrive, Ms Ramsey said the pair tried again and were told it would be another 10 minutes.
“They hailed a local taxi and put him in the back — thankfully he didn’t have any spinal injuries. He was unconscious, though, and when he arrived at the hospital they had to perform emergency surgery.”
The boys called Ms Ramsey in Perth to let her know what had happened and that they needed her permission for doctors to perform the lifesaving surgery on his brain.
“They removed part of his fractured skull to allow his brain to expand,” she told news.com.au.
Ms Ramsey broke down in tears when she revealed her son has severe brain trauma.
“They don’t know how bad it is at this stage – we have to wait for the swelling to go down, but the neurosurgeon said because of the amount of damage he’s done, he won’t make a 100 per cent recovery.
“The worst case scenario is he remains how he is, with the machines doing everything for him, or he wakes up but has no memory of anyone around him, with minimal mobility — we just don’t know what he’s going to wake up to.”
Ms Ramsey said her son unfortunately didn’t have travel insurance and so far, in the two days since he’s been admitted to hospital, they’ve been slapped with a $75,000 bill. The surgery alone cost $53,000.
“He has 24-hour care and that’s $9000 a day plus any extras like blood tests or scans,” she said.
Shane’s friend Amyleigh Mitchell started a GoFundMe and so far more than $55,000 has been raised to help cover the piling medical bills.
“It’s just been incredible. I haven’t had a chance to read the messages from people I don’t even know,” Ms Ramsey said as she fought back tears.
“People are giving donations and I don’t even know who they are — it’s just amazing.”
Ms Ramsey said she hasn’t left her son’s side and nor have his friends.
“Every single one of them have been at the hospital, sat outside since Sunday morning and not one of them have moved,” she said.
“They take it in turns to see him because you’re only allowed two people at a time in his room. They stay until they get thrown out.”
Ms Ramsey was told doctors won’t try to wake up Shane for another three days.
“After that they will consider waking him up, but it might take another week. We could be here for months before he’s able to fly [home].”
Shane’s father Andrew and his youngest brother Jay, 22, arrived in Bali on Monday night, while his older brother David, 34, is desperately trying to get a flight over from the UK.
The family, who are originally from Lancashire in the UK, moved to Australia in 2007.
