An American tourist has been detained in Paris after allegedly dropping a newborn out of a hotel window.
Authorities say the newborn tragically died after being reportedly thrown from the second floor of an ibis Styles hotel “with the umbilical cord still attached”.
According to investigators the 18 year-old woman, who is believed to be the mother, was suffering from “pregnancy denial” when she “unexpectedly” gave birth at the hotel.
Emergency services were called at 6am when a person, who is said to have witnessed the incident, heard loud screams.
The body was found in the city’s 20th arrondissement, before being wrapped in a sheet and rushed to the Robert Debre hospital for emergency medical care but did not survive the injuries.
Paris Match reported the woman is a tourist on a “study trip” with a group of other young adults in Europe.
It is understood she was taken to hospital and underwent an operation after the delivery, according to French news publication Le Parisien.
The Paris prosecutor’s office said detectives arrested the woman at the clinic and charged her with child murder.
“She was also taken into custody on site. The possibility of a denial of pregnancy is being considered.,” they added.
The Child Protection Brigade has been assigned to investigate the case as a “homicide of a minor under 15”.
“Pregnancy denial” is a condition where a mother is unaware or is not able to accept her pregnancy.
