A gunman killed five security guards and wounded one other person in a mass shooting at a popular fresh food market in Thailand’s capital.

The suspect opened fire at the Or Tor Kor Market in Bangkok’s Bang Sue district at 12.31pm local time, the Royal Thai Police said, before taking his own life.

“Police are investigating the motive. So far it’s a mass shooting,” Worapat Sukthai, deputy police chief of Bangkok’s Bang Sue district where the incident took place, told AFP.

Police are working to identify the shooter and investigating “for any possible link” to the current border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia.

Footage shows bodies strewn on a street as the pistol-wielding shooter runs along a road.

Separate footage shows market visitors and staff scrambling to hide as police search for the shooter.

Or Tor Kor Market is a short distance from Chatuchak Market, which is a major tourist destination in Bangkok and throngs with visitors every weekend.

Smartraveller has warned Aussies in the area to “exercise a high degree of caution in Thailand overall due to security and safety risks.”

“There’s an ongoing risk of terrorism in Thailand. Popular tourist areas may be the target of terrorist attacks anywhere across Thailand, including Bangkok and Phuket,” its latest update states.

A Do Not Travel warning is in effect for areas within 50 kilometres of the Thailand-Cambodia land border throughout the provinces of Buriram, Si Saket, Sa Kaeo, Surin, Ubon Ratchathani, Chanthaburi and mainland Trat, due to armed conflict in the area.

Australia’s embassy in Thailand also warned travellers to stay away from the market where the shootings took place.

Mass shootings are not uncommon in Thailand, where firearms can be obtained relatively easily due to lax gun control enforcement.
