‘Terrifying’ moment strange men jump aboard all-female houseboat near Echuca
A group of terrified women have described the moment a strange group of men allegedly attacked their houseboat – hurling abuse and urinating on their things.
Nine women who hired a houseboat on the Murray River for the weekend say they were left terrified when a group of men on another boat began hurling abuse, flashing their genitalia and throwing glass bottles.
The women, some of whom were pregnant, allege some of the men also jumped onto the houseboat and urinated on their belongings during the disturbing ordeal, which took place while they were moored near Echuca Moama on Saturday.
One of the women, who did not want to be named, said the boat of about 15 men had come up to them earlier in the day and the men had asked to get on the houseboat but the women declined.
“A few hours later we just heard this big thump. We were on the top floor and we looked down, and they had actually climbed aboard the boat,” she told 3AW.
“We were terrified. We asked them to get off. They started urinating on our stuff. They were banging on the windows trying to get in.”
She continued: “They then drove off and left people on the (house) boat. They refused to get off. It went for about half an hour. They kept coming back. They drove into the boat. There were death threats. They were saying ‘I hope you die’ and calling us really scary names.”
The woman said they were “really scared” as they were moored in an isolated area on the river.
“We tried to lock ourselves upstairs so they couldn’t get up,” she explained.
She said the group of friends were also worried about the safety of the men as they jumped between the boats near the propeller.
The owner of the houseboat the women had hired happened to own the boat the men were on too.
“He had been looking for them for hours trying to get them off because their hire had finished,” she said.
She added the owner was now left with two damaged boats.
NSW Police confirmed on Tuesday it was investigating and urged anyone with information or footage to contact Moama Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
