Commuters on trains around the incident, which is believed to have occurred on platform 19, saw the scene as they rode past.

One witness told NCA NewsWire he saw the boarded up area with five police officers on the track as well as paramedics and stretchers, with another five officers guarding the platform.

He described the scene as “very traumatic” despite large parts of the track being covered up.

“I hope no train attendants were a part of the accident,” he said.

He was rushed to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, but died on the way.

The man has not been formally identified but is believed to be in his 30s.

Trains are running, but there are major delays on the train lines with commuters being warned to allow plenty of extra travel time.

The incident is believed to have occurred on a T1 line, with one witness saying that swarms of police and paramedics were spotted on the tracks.

“Big delays on a T1 line at Sydney Central Station with heaps of police and staff on the tracks, a few stretchers on the platform,” he said.

The incident is expected to cause delays on the T1 North Shore and Western line, T2 Western Leppington line, T3 Bankstown line, T8 Airport line and T9 Northern line.

Those travelling on the T1 and T9 line have been told that their journey home could take an extra 60 minutes due to the incident.

The taking the T2, T3 and T8 can expect delays of up to 30 minutes.

“We remind commuters to be vigilant while on platforms,” Sydney trains said.
