Sinead McNamara ‘called mum in tears’ before death

INSTAGRAM model Sinead McNamara made a tearful phone call to her family shortly before her death, telling of an “incident” with another crew member.

SINEAD McNamara made a distressing phone call to her mother shortly before her death, it has been revealed.

The 20-year-old Australian model’s grief-stricken mum, Kylie, received a call from her daughter in the early hours of last Friday. The Instagram influencer was in tears as she spoke to her mother, telling her about an “incident” with another crew member on board. She also spoke to her brother, Jake, in her final hours.

The family’s Greek lawyer Charalampos Triantafyllopoulos spoke to reporters about the revelation.

“The deceased had telephoned her mother and brother shortly before the unfortunate incident under investigation,” Mr Triantafyllopoulos said in a statement, first published in online Greek newspaper, Keep Talking Greece.

“She was crying and referred to an incident that took place on the yacht with another crew member.”

The phone call to her family took place just moments before Ms McNamara was found dead on Mexican billionaire Alberto Bailleres’ $200 million Mayan Queen IV superyacht, which was docked in the port of Argostoli on the Greek island of Kefalonia.

The family statement also called on authorities to “thoroughly investigate” the unexplained death of Ms McNamara, who they said was “happy” when she communicated with them in the time she was away.

“The family expects the Greek authorities to respond to the causes and circumstances of her death and incidents that occurred just prior,” Mr Triantafyllopoulos said.

“The family state that Sinead was not having any problems, she often communicated with them and she was happy. In two days she will return to her family and her friends in Australia.

“The parents believe it crucial to thoroughly investigate both the events and incidents that preceded the death of their 20-year-old daughter.”

A doctor on board the yacht is understood to have tried to resuscitate Ms McNamara before she was taken via helicopter to a hospital in Argostoli.

The devastated family also wants answers as to the delay in hospitalising the 20-year-old following the tragic incident. She had been working as a stewardess on the luxury yacht before she died. Her mother and sister, Lauren Carr, were on their way from Australia to visit her at the time.

“In addition, they are looking for the reasons for the long delay between the time of the unfortunate incident and Sinead’s transfer to an Athens hospital,” the family’s lawyer said.

“She had been unconscious for several hours in a comatose condition and every minute was critical to her life.

“Expressing their trust in the Greek authorities, they hope that the critical issues above will be thoroughly explored and that they will receive appropriate answers for the sudden and unexpected death of their daughter.”

It has been widely reported that Ms McNamara enjoyed a night out with friends, dancing, eating and drinking in a bar in Kefalonia just 24 hours before she died.

The owner of Baroque bar at Argostoli harbour told news.com.au that she was with a group of friends and they “all looked in a good mood”.

He said they did not notice anything strange within the group during their time at the bar.

“They were dancing and had fun all together,” he said. “During the night here we saw the members of the crew having fun without something strange or bad (happening) between them or between them and other people.”

An autopsy into Ms McNamara’s death has been held but toxicology results and the inquiry into the circumstances have not been completed. It is a suspected suicide, but police are yet to officially determine how she died. It may take up to a month for toxicology reports to be returned.
