Shock footage from inside plane after severe turbulence
After experiencing turbulence so severe a woman thought she was going to die, sharing footage of the aftermath inside the plane’s cabin.
A passenger has shared footage of the aftermath of a flight that experienced such severe turbulence she thought she was going to die.
Monica Raygada, a Mexican-American, was on-board Lufthansa Flight 469 when it was forced to make an emergency landing after reportedly plummeting almost 4000 feet.
The plane was flying from Austin, Texas, in the US to Frankfurt, Germany but had to divert to Dulles International Airport in Washington D.C. following the incident last week.
Ms Raygada shared a TikTok from on-board the flight, detailing the horrifying experience.
It has since been viewed more than nine million times.
“We were all having dinner 1.5 hours into the flight and then we suddenly dropped,” she said while showing the aftermath of the turbulence.
“It felt like we were in zero gravity for some time because I saw everything flying in slow motion.”
Ms Raygada’s footage showed pillows, food, trays and other items scattered all over the aisle of the plane.
“After the initial drop where everything flew and everyone was screaming, everything came to the ground and it seemed like we just kept falling.
“That’s where everyone became dead silent. That’s when we all thought this was it.”
Ms Raygada said she frantically looked for her phone so she could text her family “goodbye”.
“I was finally able to contact them after like five minutes,” she said.
“After what it seemed like 15 minutes, crew were finally able to get up and check on anyone injured.
“Thank God most of us had our seatbelt on because this could have ended way worse.”
Ms Raygada said after about 30 minutes they were told the plane was going to make an emergency landing in Washington D.C.
Showing the impact of the turbulence, Ms Raygada shared footage of what happened to the pants she was wearing.
“These are the bottom of my pants. I flew so high even with my seatbelt on that the food still got in between me and my seat.”
Ms Raygada, who shared the video on Tuesday, has had more than 14,000 comments on it, with many shocked by the incident.
“This is so terrifying I can’t imagine,” one person wrote.
“Jeez that is terrifying – I’ve never seen that much stuff thrown around after turbulence,” said another.
Seven people aboard the flight were sent to the hospital. The extent of their injuries is unknown.
Meanwhile, Hollywood actor Matthew McConaughey’s wife Camila Alves, 41, was also on the Lufthansa flight.
She shared video on Instagram of the cluttered cabin after the mayhem.
“I was told the plane dropped almost 4000 feet, seven people went to the hospital. Everything was flying everywhere,” she her one million followers.
“To respect the privacy of those around me that’s all I am showing but the plane was CHAOS and the turbulence keep on coming,” the Brazilian model and designer added.
The Airbus A330 encountered the severe turbulence while flying over Tennessee at 37,000 feet and diverted to Dulles International Airport in Virginia, where it landed at 9.10pm, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
Alves expressed her gratitude to the German airline for the arrangements it made after the frightening episode, adding that she also grabbed a drink at a bar at the Marriott by the airport.
“I must say everyone @marriottbonvoy by the airport of Washington where we had to divert to and spend the night was so kind! And we made it to the bar with one minute before closing,” she wrote.
