QantasLink plane evacuated at Perth Airport
UPDATE: Passengers noticed a kerosene-like smell before they were evacuated via emergency slides from a QantasLink plane today.
A QANTAS plane was reportedly forced to make an emergency landing at Perth airport today.
According to radio station 6PR 882, 102 people were evacuated after reports of fumes in the cockpit of the QantasLink aircraft.
Passengers reportedly disembarked via emergency slides.
Ross Jenkins, who was among the passengers, told PerthNow he could smell a kerosene-like substance but saw no smoke.
“We landed right at the tail end of the airport which I thought was unusual,” he said.
“We came down a bit steeper than what we would normally.
“The cabin crew were told to man their stations then I heard ‘evacuate, evacuate, evacuate.’”
The pilot reported hydraulic issues on descent into Perth, an airport spokeswoman said.
PerthAirport tweeted that Qantas QF1623, an F100 aircraft with 102 passengers on board, landed safely.
In a statement, Qantas said no emergency landing was requested by the pilots.
“However emergency services are in attendance as a normal precaution,” it said.
The plane was travelling from Newman to Perth, and landed this morning at 11:36am local time.
All passengers and crew were safe and accounted for.
There were 97 passengers and five crew onboard.
