Plane ‘crashes’ with 11 people on-board as desperate hunt launched for survivors
A desperate hunt is under way after a plane with 11 people on-board reportedly crashed in rugged terrain in west-central Africa.
A plane with 11 people on-board has reportedly crashed in Cameroon with emergency services launching a desperate hunt for survivors.
However one media outlet is reporting none of the people on-board survived the crash.
The aircraft went missing at around 2pm Wednesday in Cameroon, a country in west-central Africa, shortly after takeoff, reports The Sun.
Cameroon Transport Minister Jean Ernest Ngalle Bibehe said in a statement that air traffic services lost radio contact with an aircraft that left the Nsimalen Airport in Yaounde.
According to CNA, the radio signal was lost during a storm that hit the capital city late in the afternoon.
The outlet reported that some of the passengers are workers of the Cameroon Oil Transportation Company, COTCO, and others were part of the crew.
The aircraft was due to make stops at Dompta and Belabo before returning to Nsimalen Airport.
Following the aircraft’s disappearance, it was spotted by air search teams in the forest in Nanga Eboko in the Centre Province.
The Transport Minister said emergency services are currently on their way to the location.
A ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the plane “crashed” and rescuers were “trying to see if it’s possible to save anyone”.
However, Cameroon24 was reporting it appeared that the crash left no survivors.
The plane was chartered by the private company COTCO which maintains a hydrocarbon pipeline that runs between Cameroon and neighbouring Chad, according to official sources.
