‘Panic’: Sister’s horror call from Bali
A woman revealed the moment she got a call from Bali that her sister was involved in a horror accident with injuries beyond recognition.
The sister of an Australian woman involved in a horrific accident in Bali has revealed the shock moment she received a call her sibling was in hospital fighting for her life.
Former SeaWorld worker Rebecca Ode, who has been living in Bali since January this year, was found “in and out of consciousness” on Monday night in Nusa Lembongan, an island on the southeast of Bali.
“At first, there’s a lot of panic, given that she’s in a different country, you’re relying on the updates that you’re getting from the people that are giving them to you,” she said on the Today show on Friday morning.
Ms Ode’s sister Jordyn, who is currently in Bali, said there was “a lot of panic” when she received a call explaining her sister had been involved in an accident.
“So we could only just run with the fact that we knew that we needed to get to Bali as soon as it was actually possible for us, and we were on the first flight out of Sydney the day we found out.”
After begin found in a “very bad way” on the ground, Ms Ode was rushed to Ngoerah general hospital for brain, eye and reconstructive surgery.
“She’s undergone a 14 hour surgery, so it’s pretty extensive, she’s had four surgeons working on her, so her body is incredibly tired and doing all it can to repair itself,” Jordyn explained.
“(The) great news is that we do know that she is stable this morning. And each step of the way, we’re just working towards getting her into a position where we can initiate a medevac situation for her and get her home.”
Jordyn said she’s in conversations with an Australian company to initiate the medevac for her sister.
“We’re still trying to work that out. She has to be fit to fly, to be in a position to do that … we’re just taking it one step at a time at this point, and relying heavily on, the advice of the Australian team as to when we’ll be able to airlift her out of here.”
In a Facebook post Jordyn explained her sister has lost her vision in one eye.
“The impact completely pushed her eye out of her head, and the damage was so severe they weren’t sure they could save the eye at all,” she wrote.
“Her nose was split in half, and the cartilage was shattered. They had to rebuild her face, and I am desperate to get her home for professional help.
“The orthopaedic surgeons repaired her collarbone and shoulder, which were also hit. She now has a metal plate to keep her clavicle together.”
Jordyn said she and her family have no idea how the injury happened and have “a lot of questions”, but as for now they are focused on getting Ms Ode back home to Australia.
“Unfortunately, we don’t have any answers at this point in time. We are focusing heavily on the biggest outcome here, which is to get back into Australia, so that we can actually have her re-evaluated,” Jordyn told Today.
“We’re extremely grateful for what the surgeons have done here for her up until now, of course, there’s a language barrier here, so we are hoping that the sooner we can get her home, the sooner we can have an understanding of as to where she’s at and what sort of road we have ahead for her, for her recovery.”
The family are desperately trying to raise funds to cover the rising medical bills and to bring Ms Ode home with a GoFundMe currently sitting at $141,239.
More Coverage
“There’s no Medicare system here. So the fee structure and everything at this point is, it’s increasing at a rapid rate as each day comes — so it’s a lot at the moment,” Jordyn said.
According to the fundraising page, the bills are already more than $60,000 with the medevac flight to Sydney and transfers to Newcastle expected to exceed $120,000.
“Once home Bec is likely to have a long journey of rehabilitation. We are estimating in will be close to $250,000 just to get back to Australia,” Ms Ode’s brother-in-law Jesse Wilton wrote on the GoFundMe page.
