NSW high school students save woman from drowning in rip
A school community is celebrating the efforts of three children after they rushed to save the life of a female tourist struggling in a rip.
Three high school students have being labelled “heroes” after saving the life of a female tourist who was struggling in deep water after getting stuck in a rip.
The students from Woolgoolga High School, on the NSW Mid North Coast, were heading home from a school surfing lesson on March 1 when one of them noticed a woman in trouble.
Year 9 student Finn Casper spotted the woman and immediately called out to his peers, attracting attention from Year 8 student Koby Kudrins who sprung into action.
Koby started running towards the water but realised it would be too dangerous to enter the water without a board, so instead helped his peer Jack Hayes, also in Year 8.
Jack ran into the water and paddled towards the woman, using skills he had learned in the school’s surf survival course.
He managed to help the woman onto his board and delivered her back to shore safely.
In a statement shared to Facebook, school surfing teachers John Morgan and John Elliott said they had “no doubt that these boys prevented a terrible tragedy as the woman they rescued was swimming alone in a dangerous location and was a very poor swimmer”.
“The boys remained calm, used their skills and knowledge, and demonstrated the kind of selfless behaviour typical of so many of our students,” the statement said.
“Congratulations boys! You have done yourselves and our school proud.”
Another post from the school commended the trio on how they represented the school.
“Congratulations to Finn, Jack and Koby and Mr Morgan and Mr Elliott for your involvement in this life-saving rescue and for representing our school with pride,” it read.
