A MAN who claimed there was a bomb on a flight in a desperate bid to stop his wife from leaving the country now faces three years in jail over the outrageous stunt.

Ilya Eremeev, 30, was allegedly drunk when he called in the bomb threat on Monday as his wife was preparing to leave for Moscow on a business trip, police in Kyrgyzstan said.

The threat lead to Kyrgyzstan’s main airport, Manas International Airport near the capital Bishkek, to be evacuated and flights were cancelled.

Eremeev allegedly made the false threat just as Kyrgyzstan was preparing to host a number of international dignitaries, including Russian prime minister Dmitry Medvedev and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, at a gathering of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation this week.

Eremeev was arrested and is being held while police investigate the incident, the BBC reported.

If charged, he could face up to three years in prison for providing false information about an act of terrorism.

Eremeev wouldn’t be the first person to try such a brazen act.

In July, Queenstown airport in New Zealand was evacuated after a cleaner found a note that alluded to a bomb on a Qantas plane that had arrived from Sydney.

The incident sparked a major security scare but no explosives were found.

And in September, in a more bizarre incident, a Canadian man made a hoax bomb threat to Kelowna airport in British Columbia because he was running late for his flight.

Passengers already on board the flight were held for two hours as police scoured the aircraft for explosives, though none were found.

The man was found guilty of two counts of mischief and fined $3700.
