Major update after Aussie dad allegedly caught with meth in Bali

South Australian father Troy Smith was holidaying in Bali with his wife when police allegedly caught him with methamphetamine.

An Australian father who was detained in Bali after allegedly being caught with methamphetamine has been moved from prison into rehab.

Troy Smith, from Port Lincoln in South Australia, was arrested in Canggu, an Indonesian resort town around 10km north of Kuta, while holidaying with his wife on April 30.

It is alleged Mr Smith was carrying 3.5g of methamphetamine.

The 49-year-old was initially thought to be facing a 12-year maximum sentence after being charged for drug possession. However, he was also later charged with drug trafficking.

The father of two was taken to the Detention Centre in Denpasar on May 6.

On Wednesday it was announced Mr Smith has been transferred from prison to a rehabilitation facility after a forensic assessment was conducted into his medical condition, according to theDaily Mail.

“As a result, Troy has been moved from the cells of the Central Police to a rehabilitation facility,” a statement from the consultancy firm his family hired said.

“We acknowledge and appreciate the professionalism of the Indonesian police force and allied health services.”

It comes after the conditions of the detention cell Mr Smith was being held in came to light last week.

The father-of-two, who formerly worked as a fisherman and for the Lower Eyre Peninsula Council, was being held in one large room with almost a dozen other suspects and one shared toilet, The Advertiser reported.

Inside, suspects were fed meals of “nasi bungkus” which translates to “wrapped rice”.

His lawyer Edward Pangkahila told the publication Mr Smith was “stressed” and had been “crying”.

“He’s very sorry and he’s not meaning to do this,” said Mr Pangkahila.

Mr Smith had only been in Bali for a week with his wife, Tracy Smith – whom he married in December 2023 - before he was arrested.

Police allegedly discovered drugs on the bed of his hotel room, along with a brown envelope and a package that was sent from an address in Cairns addressed to Mr Smith.

The landlord of the property, Graham Kirko, said Mr Smith lived at the address listed on the package but “did not spend much time there”.

“He kept very much to himself. He had a couple of people come visit even in the evening and that was it, he was very quiet,” Mr Kirko told The Advertiser.

Another one of Mr Smith’s lawyer, Sienny Karmana, said the 49-year-old tried to initially run from police because he was scared.

“Police said that he tried to run away, but police got him back. They fired shots into the air, he was surprised and then he fell down and then police got him,” she said.

Mr Smith was taken to Bhayangkara Hospital at the time before he transferred to the Detention Centre in Denpasar.
