Inside the campervan where the Zavros family will spend two weeks stranded in the Simpson Desert

An Aussie family have made headlines after becoming stranded in the desert for two weeks in their campervan. This is what’s in store for them.

An Xbox, airconditioner, fridge and a shower are just some of the items the Australian family trapped in the Simpson Desert have at their disposal as they face an anxious wait.

Orios Zavros, his wife Lindsey and children Zoe and Zane were travelling across the country on the trip of a lifetime before they found themselves stranded in South Australia’s Simpson Desert when their campervan became bogged after heavy rain last week.

The family set off their emergency beacon about 10am on Friday after becoming stuck in their modified Mitsubishi Canter about 150km northwest of Oodnadatta in South Australia’s Simpson Desert.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) spoke to the family and confirmed no one was injured on Friday afternoon. A rescue plane delivered a satellite phone and water, with police confirming they had enough essential supplies to see them through the weekend.

A video posted to their YouTube channel a year ago has given an insight into how the family of four will be living while stuck in the desert.

In the clip, Mr Zavros is seen walking through the custom lift-off camper canopy, explaining the luxe fit-out.

“As you walk in, there’s a 140L Waeco fridge, and then our pantry drawers, just above that we’ve got our entertainment unit and Xbox. We can actually watch that from the kids’ beds down here. Or when we put our bed down,” he said.

“In the kitchen, we’ve got the usual bits and bobs. We’ve got a room air conditioner … we’ve got a gas cooktop which we don’t really use, it is a bit of backup if our induction stopped working or if we run out of power. We’ve got a washing machine, that’s fantastic when you’ve got two kids.”

It is not known how long the family will be stuck in the mud for.

They had been heading back home to Perth after a 12-month-long holiday. Recovery efforts have been hindered by bad weather, with police estimating the family could be stranded for weeks.

Locals also expect the family to remain trapped for some time.

Mount Dare Hotel owner Graham Scott said the family will have to wait for the ground to dry out.

“All the roads around here are partially under water. There are vast flat areas that have still got water laying on them, and where the water has recently been on the roads – it’d be a quagmire if you tried to get through,” he told the ABC.

“There’s only one track out there … [and] it’d be at least a week before you’d be able to get onto roads with any confidence.

“They’ll be fine, as long as they’ve got food and water … I gather they’re not on a fixed time schedule so my advice is to find as many good board games as you can and just sit there and wait until it dries out.”

Several family members and friends, including Ben Allen, have taken to Facebook to share details of the Zavroses misadventures.

“Stay safe until they come and recover (you),” he wrote.

Another friend Russ Cullen also wished his mates well and offered some words of advice.

“That ground will become firmer faster than you know it once it gets some sun and wind on it,” he commented.

“Don’t get impatient and chop up where you are and make it worse.”

Both Mr Allen and Mr Cullen were confident their friend would make it out safely.

“He knows what to do,” Mr Cullen said.

“If he waits and uses good judgment he will drive out of there no worries.”
