INCREDIBLE images have emerged of the aftermath of a passenger plane crash in Peru that left a trail of fire on the runway.

Peruvian Airlines flight 9110 crashed during a “forced landing” at Francisco Carle Airport at 4.30pm on Tuesday local time, air safety authorities said.

The Boeing 737, carrying 141 passengers, veered off the runway and onto the grass.

Pictures and video on social media show the aircraft on fire, thick black smoke billowing from its wreckage, with a several-metre trail of flames behind it.

In a statement, the airline said all passengers on board were evacuated and none were “considerably injured”.

Firefighters at the high-elevation regional airport, which serves the Junin Region of the South American country, about 270 kilometres from the capital Lima, put out the fire.

“(The aircraft) turned on the right side, skidding off the runway ... the high professionalism of our cabin crew prevented a major incident,” the airline said.

The cause of the accident is now under investigation. However aviation watchers claim a “dual gear collapse” on landing was to blame.
