A man who until three weeks ago was perfectly healthy and happy has died after being found unconscious on the toilet by his housemates.

Felipe Perdomo arrived in Melbourne from Colombia less than a month ago “in search of a better future” – he had begun studying English and was building a lively social network.

That was until on Sunday, July 16, when his housemates discovered him passed out in the bathroom of their two-storey house.

“He was blocking the doorway so they had to find a way to move the door so they could get to him,” Melbourne local Alex Vidal told news.com.au.

He was immediately rushed to hospital where he was placed in a coma as doctors scrambled to determine what caused him to lose consciousness.

Despite endless testing and speculation he may have contracted some kind of bacterial infection, his medical team remained stumped.

Mr Perdomo, whose aunty flew to Melbourne to be at his side, never woke up, nor did his condition ever slightly improve.

His family was this week faced with making the paralysing decision to disconnect his life support and donate his organs – a procedure that was set to go ahead on Thursday.

Mr Vidal said his family had been left shattered by the 32-year-old’s sudden and unexplained death.

“They’re devastated, there are no words to describe how they feel right now, it’s horrible, and even worse is that nobody knows what caused it,” Mr Vidal, who is co-ordinating a GoFundMe account for the family, said.

Mr Vidal described him a happy and sociable man who wasn’t into drugs or partying, and only wanted to secure a better future for his family back in Colombia.

“He was a really friendly guy who was always smiling and always trying to help, and he was a good student,” he said.

“The reason he migrated was so he could give back to his family back in Colombia, but his dream got crushed after three weeks.”

His housemates had been left traumatised by what happened too.

“They’re all shocked, they can’t believe what’s happened. When they heard they couldn’t find a cause, it was even worse,” Mr Vidal said.

His loved ones had been left needing to co-ordinate every parent’s worst nightmare – planning their child’s funeral.

Mr Vidal said the young man would be cremated and his ashes flown back to Colombia, but the procedure was proving expensive.

“That’s the reason for the GoFundMe because the whole process is so expensive and he didn’t have life insurance,” he said.

“But nobody, especially a healthy person like him, would even think you would need that.”

He also revealed Mr Perdomo’s girlfriend in Colombia was planning to move to Australia to be with him.

“She was planning to come join him in a few months which is even worse.”

He revealed doctors were still completely dumbfounded by what took Mr Perdomo’s life.

“The doctors still do not have an exact diagnosis, they have considered a huge amount of bacteria that could have caused his condition, but to this day the doctors agree that it is a mystery,” he wrote to the GoFundMe page.

“The doctors are in communication with his family in Colombia, who have already been made aware that there is absolutely nothing medically possible to do.

“Since Felipe does not have repatriation insurance and the prices of cremation and transfer vary between 15,000 and 25,000 dollars, we appeal to the goodwill of all the people who were able to share something with him and to all the charitable souls who can contribute as little as possible to ease the pain of this family that was left more than indebted in the attempt to help their son pursue his dream of improving his quality of life.

“We thank you infinitely. Friends, relatives and acquaintances of Felipe in Australia.”
