Grim reason for horrible stench in man’s hotel room
A hotel guest thought his feet were to blame for an overpowering stench in his room, but the real reason was far more sinister.
A hotel guest in Tibet thought an overpowering stench in his room was because of his own feet – but discovered hours later that there was a corpse under his bed.
The man from China, identified only as Mr Zhang, was staying at the Guzang Shuhua Inn, a hotel in Lhasa popular for offering its guests a colourful backdrop for their social media snaps, the BBC reported.
He said he checked into the hotel on April 21 and took a three-hour nap in the room, where he detected a foul odour which he assumed came from his feet, New York Post reports.
After his nap, he went out, but when he returned to change for dinner, the stench was even stronger.
The man requested to change rooms, but after he had again gone to sleep, he was woken by hotel staff and police who told him a body had been discovered under the bed in his first room.
Investigators took his statement and collected a DNA sample, but told him not to be concerned because they had already arrested someone on a train headed to Lanzhou, 2000km away.
Mr Zhang told local media that he decided to speak out about the incident because the hotel initially denied the whole thing.
He also posted a review of his macabre experience online, where it went viral on social media.
“I am very scared and I am still struggling to sleep,” he told Shangyou News on Sunday.
At one point he assumed the smell might be coming from the bakery downstairs, or the result of the room’s heating system.
He also wondered if his feet were the problem, according to the BBC.
The suspect was arrested in a joint operation carried out by the Lanzhou police and the Xi’an police.
The dead man was later identified by police as a Mr Wang, according to the Mirror.
