Former footballer identified as tourist who died in cliff jump gone wrong
The man who died jumping off a cliff in Spain while his wife filmed it has been identified as an ex-footballer at a top European club.
Warning: Distressing
The Dutch tourist who was tragically killed while trying to perform a daring cliff stunt in front of his horrified wife and two kids has been identified as a former European footballer.
Mourad Lamrabatte, a 31-year-old who played for SBV Vitesse in the Netherlands, attempted to leap feet first from a high cliff in Majorca, but failed to clear the rocks beneath him while making a 35m plunge near a holiday resort, The Sun reported.
The deadly leap was filmed by his heartbroken widow.
As he jumped, Lamrabatte belted out a massive scream — but didn’t have enough momentum to clear the razor-sharp rocks below. He then landed on them, and his wife could be heard screaming: “Oh my God.”
Police had yet to question her about the tragedy because she was still in a state of shock, according to The Sun.
An autopsy found Lamrabatte drowned in a state of semi-consciousness rather than dying from impact injuries.
His former team, SBV Vitesse, one of the oldest pro soccer clubs in the top Dutch league known as the Eredivisie, offered condolences.
Lamrabatte, who used the surname Besselink as a footballer before changing it, used to play with Vitesse’s reserve team Jong Vitesse.
“Vitesse has received the sad news that Mourad Lamrabatte has tragically died,” the club said in a statement.
“The former Jong Vitesse striker had just turned 31. He wore the club colours during the 2010/2011 season, when he was part of the U23 team which won the U23 cup that season.
“In July 2010 he scored in a first team exhibition game.”
A club spokesman added: “Vitesse wishes Mourad’s family and friends a lot of strength in coping with their great loss.”
