Mr Hameed said in a Twitter post: “Incident in Maafushi in which our officers restrained a female tourist seems to be badly handled.

“I apologise to the tourist & the public for this. The challenge I have taken up is to professionalise the police service & we are working on that.

“This matter is being investigated.”

Tourists visiting holiday resorts in the Maldives are allowed to wear swimwear on the islands. However, local islands ban bikinis and skimpy clothing, being an Islamic country.

The official advice from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade states: “Standards of dress and behaviour are conservative in Male and non-resort islands. Dress modestly in Malé and non-resort islands. Take care not to offend.”
