Father-of-two blinded after random glass attack while holidaying in UK
A father fears he may never see his children or fiancee again after he was hit in the face with glass while enjoying a beer with friends on Boxing Day.
There are fears that a father-of-two may never see his family again after he was glassed in the face by a stranger while on holiday.
Matthew James Syron was enjoying a drink with friends at the Revolution De Cuba nightclub in Leeds on Boxing Day when he was “brutally” attacked by another patron with a bottle or glass to the face, blinding him instantly.
The 32-year-old, who has lived in Australia for the past 11 years, was on a vacation in the UK with his family when the incident occurred.
He is now facing a lengthy recovery and multiple surgeries in an attempt to fix his eyesight, with “no guarantees” he will be able to see again.
With such a long road ahead, he will be separated from his fiancee Keone and children, three-year-old Brixon and one-year-old Meka, while he remains in an English hospital.
His family have set up a GoFundMe campaign to help with the costs of recovery as his “business and income” are likely to suffer from his accident.
“Along with being heartbroken and adjusting to life, nobody needs the added financial pressures in such traumatic circumstances,” his sister Claudia Syron wrote.
“Upon his return his medical bills could be astronomical and he will undoubtably need love, support and rehabilitation.”
Mr Syron was in top shape when he travelled to England, completing an Ironman competition just one month ago and writing on social media that he was “proud” of his achievements.
“To the people reading this and who are wanting to make a change in their lives and be better. It’s never to late to start and you 100 per cent have enough time to put in the work. Just figure it out and go for it,” he wrote on Instagram.
West Yorkshire Police are investigating the serious assault, UK media reported.
“A 32-year-old man was hit with a glass and received serious eye injuries which required treatment,” a police spokesperson said.
“A 37-year-old man has been arrested in connection with this matter and remains in custody at this time.”
