It appears the Piper Cherokee suffered engine failure during a training flight, forcing the young pilot to shut down a series of onboard systems and make the emergency landing.

The plane left from Bankstown Airport at 2.15pm, with the pilot making a mayday call about six minutes later.

Engine failure was then reported at 2.30pm.

The plane came to rest among trees, near sporting courts, in the corner of the park.

The pilot and passenger suffered minor injuries but have refused treatment by paramedics.

Mary Immaculate Catholic Primary School students were in the sports park at the time of the crash but none have been injured.

Six Fire and Rescue NSW crews, including HAZMAT and Rescue specialists, responded to the scene, along with senior FRNSW Commanders.

Firefighters have established a 100m fire protection zone and are monitoring the site for any atmospheric change or fuel leaks.

The aircraft was reportedly carrying up to 340 litres of fuel.

NSW Police have also closed Restwell Rd in both directions.

Australian Transport Safety Bureau has since launched an investigation.

“The ATSB has been notified of an accident near Bankstown, involving a Piper Cherokee light aircraft, and is gathering further information to inform an investigation decision,” a ATSB spokesman said.
