Dramatic video shows moment wave from cruise ship causes ‘mini tsunami’ and destroys Italian marina
ASTONISHING new footage has emerged showing the moment a marina was destroyed by a wave created by a cruise ship’s propellers.
SHOCKING new footage has emerged showing the moment a quiet marina is destroyed by a “mini tsunami” created by a cruise ship’s propellers as it sails out of port in Italy.
According to The Sun, a video posted on Break.com shows a different perspective of the accident in Sicily from the 134,000-ton cruise ship’s point of view.
The man filming can be heard expressing concern for those moored close to the pier, saying: “This may not be good for these boats.”
He then adds: “There’s no way, look how close we are.”
Moments later a powerful wash from a cruise ship’s propellers creates waves so high it smashes into the smaller ships.
People on board can be heard gasping as they look down and see the damage caused.
It comes after CCTV footage captured the dramatic incident as the Carnival Vista ship caused chaos as it left the port of Messina, Sicily, last Sunday.
Small boats are swamped and the pontoons are ripped from their moorings and overturn, dragging several pleasure craft underwater.
It is said to have caused almost $400,000 in damages to the small Marina del Nettuno, which hosts a seafood restaurant and spaces for 160 vessels.
There were no reports of injuries and all the boats that were damaged were unmanned at the time.
The port authority has launched an investigation into the incident.
It was unclear why the cruise liner sailed so close to the marina as the video showed the sea and weather conditions were calm.
The 1,062ft-long Vista is the newest and largest vessel in Miami-based Carnival Cruise Line’s fleet.
It carries almost 4,000 passengers and features a full IMAX movie theatre, a water park and an aerial cycling track which suspends riders 50 metres above the sea.
