Central Station evacuated ahead of peak hour after anonymous threat

Sydney’s largest train station was briefly evacuated on Monday after police received an anonymous threat.

Sydney’s major Central Station has been evacuated following what police believe was a hoax bomb threat made by an anonymous caller.

The call came in on Monday afternoon at about 2.20pm, prompting authorities to evacuate passengers on the underground platform 24 and 25 travelling on the T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra line.

Officers from the Police Transport Command commenced inquiries, but nothing was located following a search of the area.

The incident was quickly contained and trains were back to running on schedule just before 2.40pm.

NSW Police have confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public, however inquiries remain ongoing.

Transport for NSW has warned passengers to allow extra travel time, however its understood the issue should be contained before the peak hour rush.

“Sydney Trains takes the safety of our passengers and staff extremely seriously. We have over 13,000 CCTVs cameras across the network and work closely with NSW Police to deter and deal with illegal activity,” a Transport for NSW spokesperson said.
