A MAN and his young daughter are dead after a plane crash-landed on a popular beach.
The father and daughter were walking along Caspersen Beach in Venice, Florida, when a plane was forced to make a dramatic landing on shore.
The man died at the scene while his daughter was flown to All Children’s Hospital in St Petersburg where she later died from her injuries. A woman who was with them was treated for cardiac arrest according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office and was taken to Venice Regional Hospital, The Herald-Tribune reported.
The pilot and passenger were uninjured and the National Transport Safety Bureau is currently investigating the tragic accident.
Police said authorities received a call about a plane in distress and the pilot was instructed to land at Venice Municipal Airport.
But the plane was too large to land so was advised to land on shore.
“The pilot was going to try to land on the beach,” police said.
“The pilot of the 1972 Piper Cherokee and his passenger have been rescued and were uninjured. “A man and one of his children who were walking on the beach were apparently injured by the plane.”
It remains unclear if the father and daughter were hit by the plane or debris.
The pilot was identified as Karl Kokomoor, 57, and the passenger was David Theen, 60. They were not injured.
Kokomoor released a statement that was read to media by his family’s pastor.
“The plane hit the water to rest with the nose down on the water’s edge,” the statement said. “It was only after I exited the plane did I realise there were people on the beach. I never saw them. I am deeply, deeply sorry.” The US National Transportation Safety Board is investigating
Caspersen Beach has been ranked as the third best tourist attraction in Venice by travel site Trip Advisor.
The plane came down at the southern end of the beach, which is popular with families.
