A couple’s dream holiday to Bali quickly turned into a nightmare after a horror moped crash left them both fighting for life.

Brits Joella Senior, 27, and Alex Hoyle, 29, are in a critical condition in a hospital in Bali after their Honda scooter collided with a car in Kerobokan, North Kuta, on the evening of June 12.

Mr Hoyle is in a coma after smashing his head, fracturing his jaw and breaking his cheek bone. He’s also had an operation to stabilise bones attached to his ribs, the Nottingham Post reported, and his liver and lungs are damaged.

Social media executive Miss Senior is in a slightly better condition and is able to talk after having major surgery on her broken arm, damaged rib cage and fractured pelvis. She’s also had operations on her collarbone and cheek bone.

The couple’s friend Georgie Steel said she was “in utter disbelief”.

“Me and my partner Oli chatted to them that day and they were both having the best time on a holiday of a lifetime.

“They’d gone out for two weeks in Bali on their first proper getaway together, and this happened on their third day. I knew something was serious when I was asked to get Alex’s mother’s phone number.

“I’m best friends with Joella and Oli is best friends with Alex, and have been all their lives. We were thinking they can’t have been in an accident.”

A fundraising page for the couple has raised more than £76,000 ($133,800).

Mr Hoyle’s family are at his bedside, while Miss Senior’s family are on the way soon.

An email from the Hoyle family said they were “encouraged by the excellent surgical work undertaken so far to both” of the unfortunate pair.

“All family and friends are deeply touched by the generosity, love and best wishes they are receiving from friends, family and even complete strangers,” the family statement adds.

“It is amazing to the family just how caring and generous people can be in these difficult economic times for us all.”

A spokesman for the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office said: “We are providing support to the families of two British nationals involved in a road accident in Bali and are in touch with the local authorities.”
