Brisbane Water Police search for canoe owner near Peel Island

Police are searching for the owner of a canoe that was found submerged off the coast of an uninhabited island.

Brisbane Water Police officers are searching for the owner of a green canoe after it was found submerged off the coast of Queensland.

The large green canoe was found north of Peel Island on the south western side of the Amity Banks, near Moreton Bay, about 6.30am on Monday.

Police have conducted a land and water search in the area and are seeking community assistance to locate the owner of the vessel.

There was no personal property found in the canoe to indicate who it belonged to, according to police.

Formerly used as a quarantine station, asylum and leper colony, Peel Island is situated between Cleveland and North Stradbroke Island and is only accessible by sea.

Investigators are urging anyone who may recognise the canoe or has information regarding the owner to call police.
