Bodies of Aussie surfers Callum and Jake Robinson on way home from Mexico
A significant step has been made in bringing the Australian brothers who were killed on a surfing trip in Mexico home.
The bodies of Australian brothers Callum and Jake Robinson, who were killed on a surfing trip, have been transported across the border from Mexico to the United States to make their journey home.
The Perth brothers were killed, along with their American friend Jack Carter Rhoad, in what Mexican police have characterised as a bungled robbery while they were camping in Baja California state.
Their parents Debra and Martin Robinson were waiting for them at a funeral home in San Diego, California on Friday, News Corp Australia reported.
They had flown to Mexico to help investigations and visited the morgue in Ensenada to identify their sons’ bodies on Sunday (local time).
Speaking from San Diego earlier this week about their heartbreaking loss, Ms Robinson had said: “They were young men enjoying their passion of surfing together.
“Now it’s time to bring … them home to family and friends – and the ocean waves in Australia. Please live bigger, shine brighter and love harder in their memory.”
Jake, 30, Callum, 33, and Jack, 30, were believed to have been shot during an attempt to steal the tyres from their ute, according to officials.
Their bodies were found in a well near the town of Santo Thomas, about 45 kilometres southeast of Ensenada.
This week the girlfriend of one of the alleged killers reportedly turned against her boyfriend to become the star witness in the prosecution.
Ari Gisell was arrested earlier this week with her partner Jesús Gerardo, also known as “El Kekas”, and his brother Cristian Alejandro.
Their surnames have been suppressed according to local laws.
“She has flipped on the ringleader and the evidence she’s provided to the prosecution will lead this case going forward,” Nine News correspondent Alison Piotrowski, who was in the Ensenada courtroom, told 2GB’s Ben Fordham on Thursday.
“What’s alleged is that Jesús Gerardo was driving her car that night when he went out to that remote campsite. The prosecution is saying what we’ve been talking about for the last couple of days has potentially happened, that the two Aussies and their American friend were ambushed.”
Prosecutors allege Jesús Gerardo “killed them, took their tyres, put the tyres on her car and drove back”, Nine News reported.
When he went back to their house, the court heard he allegedly told Ari Gisell, “I f**ked up three gringos.”
The court heard she asked, “What do you mean?” to which he replied, “I killed them.”
Ari Gisell was arrested at her mother’s house later that day and told police she was allegedly a victim of domestic violence and wanted to protect her four-year-old child, the court heard.
