Young Belgian tourist killed in Magnetic Island scooter crash
The family of the 26-year-old Belgian tourist was notified of her death on Saturday morning, while police confirm neither alcohol nor speeding was a factor in the incident.
A Belgian tourist has died after her motor scooter crashed into a street sign.
The 26-year-old was riding the scooter along Horseshoe Bay Road on Magnetic Island just after 3pm on Friday before the collision occurred.
The young tourist sustained internal injuries and was administered first aid by passers-by until emergency services arrived.
She was taken to the Townsville University Hospital with internal injuries where she underwent emergency surgery.
The 26-year-old died later that night in hospital.
While no one witnessed the incident, police said there is no indication speed was a factor in the crash, and that the young tourist, who was wearing a helmet at the time, simply did not see the street sign.

It is understood there is also no indication the victim was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash.
Police worked with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to notify the victim’s family in Belgium, whom police confirmed were informed of the 26-year-old’s death on Saturday morning AEST.
The Forensic Crash Unit is conducting ongoing investigations into the incident while police will prepare a report for the Coroner.
