Australian woman Chloe Mibus involved in horror car accident in Canada

In a matter of seconds, Australian woman Chloe Mibus went from having the holiday of a lifetime — to hanging onto her life. Now, she is begging for help.

It was supposed to be the holiday of a lifetime, but within seconds — Chloe Mibus was hit by a truck, and her life changed forever.

Ms Mibus, from Hamilton in Victoria, was driving in a rental car by herself on October 2 in Canada, when a truck T-boned her on the driver’s side of the vehicle.

Trapped and alone, Ms Mibus managed to crawl out of the wreckage before calling for help. Once emergency services arrived, she was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries ranging from a lacerated spleen, serious internal bleeding, multiple pelvic bone breaks, pubic symphysis separation and a broken sacrum.

Ms Mibus, who did have travel insurance but her policy was set at a low cap, claims she will now be tens of thousands of dollars out of pocket following the crash.

Launching a GoFundMe to assist with the mounting hospital bills, Ms Mibus says she faces an uncertain future.

“I’m expected to require inpatient care for the coming months, followed by several months of outpatient rehabilitation,” she wrote on the appeal.

“While I am grateful to be alive, the journey ahead is long, difficult, and uncertain.

“Due to the accident happening outside of my home country, my medical insurance coverage is capped extremely low. After only nine days in the hospital receiving pain management (and no remedial care), I’m already tens of thousands of dollars in debt.”

Ms Mibus claims that her hospital fees alone — excluding treatments, medications, and services — amount to nearly $5,000 per night.

“I need to return to Australia as soon as possible for the surgery to realign my hips/pelvis, which would cost too many hundreds of thousands of dollars here in Canada.

“To take this flight, I’ve had to purchase mobility equipment (wheelchair, walker, commode, Roho cushion, etc), stock up on unsubsidised medications, have my mum fly to Canada to accompany me (as I’m not cleared to fly alone), and secure accessible flight tickets.

“The costs for this journey are currently around $50,000.”

Ms Mibus hopes to raise $120,000 through the fundraising platform to assist with paying off the cost of the flight along with mounting medical bills, including the hospital stay, ambulance services, medications, mobility equipment, medical imaging, orthopaedic and trauma surgeon consultations.

Ms Mibus said the funds would also go towards “daily living expenses during the long recovery period, including rent in an accessible place, utilities and food”.

“I never thought I’d be in a position to ask for this kind of support,” Ms Mibus said.

“It’s been a rude and cruel awakening to realise that had this accident happened in Australia, there wouldn’t be this enormous financial strain on top of the numerous other challenges, like trying to stay alive. It’s a deeply dehumanising experience.

“I’ll admit that setting up this GoFundMe raises many difficult emotions: sadness, shame, embarrassment, devastation, and heartbreak. Part of me still hopes I’ll wake up from this nightmare, with no scars and able to walk again immediately and have all my blood back where it’s supposed to be.

“But I am not too proud to ask for help. This accident has been hell, and I need your support to come out the other side.”

Speaking to news.com.au, Ms Bibus’ sister Eliza Morgan said the crash came at the worst possible time.

“Chloe turned 27 on the 1st of October, and crashed the next day on the 2nd,” Ms Morgan said.

“She is in Royal Melbourne Hospital now, and she is doing pretty well. But it’s been a traumatic experience, and with the physical side along with the the mental side, this has been a lot to deal with. But she is doing as well as can be and I cannot wait to see her.”
